Hibernation Hymn

Besides the autumn poets sing,
A few prosaic days
A little this side of the snow
And that side of the haze.
— Emily Dickinson, "November"

As the leaves begin blanketing the gardens, we—like the plants—are preparing for our own hibernation. It’s been a busy season and we will certainly welcome some rest!

We will be preparing the plants for their dormancy in the upcoming weeks. For young and tender evergreens, we will apply Wilt-Pruf. This waxy spray protects the delicate leaves of newly established or fragile plants from the drying winds of winter.

This is also a good time of year to plant woody shrubs. The plants are already beginning their dormancy, so they are less ‘shocked’ by the stress of planting—and come spring, they’ll have plenty of rain to feed new roots and establish their footing.

We’ll also apply a final round of soil amendments to permeate into the ground over winter. This ensures the plants have the nutrients and energy they need when they wake in the spring.

In a few weeks when woody shrubs and trees are fully dormant, we’ll begin our first rounds of pruning.

As usual, we have holiday wreaths and decorations planned for anyone who wants them. If you haven’t informed us of your wishes for holiday decor, please reach out!
